Indications for Endoscopy

Dysphagia, persistent nausea and vomiting, or abdominal pain are common indications for endoscopy after bariatric surgery, and often, strictures and ulceration are common underlying pathophysiology. Presentations of fistulae can range from relatively insidious, such as unexplained weight loss after a period of weight stabilization or unexplained weight regain in the absence of increased caloric intake, but also can present as profuse upper gastrointestinal bleeding, empyema, or pneumomediastinum. In general, the anatomical endpoint of the fistula will dictate the presentation.
